A unique event commensurate with Karl Lagerfeld’s genius.

CHANEL hosted a memorial celebration in Karl Lagerfeld’shonour with FENDI and KARL LAGERFELD at the Grand Palais in Paris on June 20th, 2019.

Fendi, Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld paid tribute to Karl Lagerfeld’s legacy and his unprecedented creativity, which expanded beyond fashion to include design, photography, publishing, illustration, and architecture. The event was conceived, directed and designed by Robert Carsen, the acclaimed theater, opera, and artistic director.

The artists and the 2,500 guests present at the Grand Palais to celebrate Karl Lagerfeld were immersed in a spectacular exhibition of 56 towering portraits of the designer taken throughout his life, including by some of the world’s most celebrated photographers, against the backdrop of a décor inspired by his favorite colors – black and white, set off by a touch of red.

Video clips retracing the couturier’s life were punctuated by testimonials from personalities who were close to him, along with performances by actors, musicians and dancers whose work he admired, interpreting pieces that he loved.

Actresses Tilda Swinton, Fanny Ardant, Cara Delevingne and Helen Mirren read excerpts from works by Karl Lagerfeld’s favorite writers, including Emily Dickinson, Virginia Woolf, Edith Sitwell and Colette, along with some of his most inspiring quotes and brilliant prefaces.

The performances included dancer Lil Buck; violinist Charlie Siem (who played Paganini, a favorite composer of Karl Lagerfeld’s mother Elizabeth, who played the violin); Argentine choreographer German Cornejo, accompanied by his troupe of 17 tango dancers and seven musicians from Buenos Aires (Carlos Gardel was Karl’s favorite singer and the tango his favorite dance). Chinese pianist Lang Lang and singer-songwriter Pharrell Williams took the stage to pay tribute through their art to an exceptional figure who many of the talents present considered a dear friend, and someone who was a great inspiration to them.

Chanel’s Métiers d’Art Maison Michel at 2019 Hyères Festival of Fashion, Photography and Fashion Accessories

CHANEL’s Métiers d’art Maison Michel, a milliner since 1936, exhibited a selection of hats at the Villa Noailles during the 34th edition of the Hyères International Festival of Fashion, Photography and Fashion Accessories.

Maison Michel’s hats and head accessories – fedoras, caps, boaters, veils, bonnets – pay homage to Maison Michel’s craftsmanship and introduced visitors to some of its most beautiful fashion creations. The installation unveiled what goes into creating hats, from initial sketches to the selection of materials and how they are brought to life in the Maison Michel ateliers.

Since 1936 Maison Michel has imagined hats that are anything but an accessory. A reflection of its period, a dialogue with trends, a design that evolves as rapidly as the head it will dress: this is the mission of a fashion-house with a savoir-faire unaltered, yet constantly re-envisioned.

As a part of CHANEL’s Métiers d’Arts houses, Maison Michel Paris collaborates with prestigious brands; since 2006, it also offers its own eponymous label characterised by the most cutting-edge creative approach.

Priscilla Royer, as its Creative Director since Winter 2015-2016, engages in a reflection reaching beyond the hat to the head that carries it, geared towards the individual and his or her style. The aura of Maison Michel is carried by strong personalities —feminine as well as masculine—, designs that combine innovative technologies, alternative cultural and historical references, wearability and attitude.

“At the Parisian ateliers, vocabularies are turned on their heads, and norms are shaken up. These desacralised objects—in form as well as in function— are versatile and adaptable, and reinjected into a multi-facetted daily life. This way, Maison Michel perpetuates what hats have always achieved: to be a frame as well as a celebration of all faces.” – 2019 Hyères Festival of Fashion, Photography and Fashion Accessories.

Christoph Rumpf won the 2019 Hyères Festival and will be on show at the MBFW Berlin.

Since 1986, the Villa Noailles in Hyères, in the South of France, has been transformed each April into the centre for young talents in the international fashion world and photography.

This year, the coveted award for talented young designers went to Christoph Rumpf from Austria. In addition to the prize money and the patronage of renowned fashion houses, he will also be invited by Mercedes-Benz to present his collection at the MBFW in Berlin this July as part of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Talents programme. At the 34th edition of the renowned festival, the mobility service provider also presented the showrooms “The Shortlisted” and “The Formers”.

For the high-profile jury, comprising of jury president Natacha Ramsay-Levi (Artistic Director Chloé), last year’s winners Rushemy Botter and Lisi Herrebrugh, Samira Nasr (Fashion Director Vanity Fair USA), Jojo Qian (Fashion Director T Magazine China) and Charlotte Casiraghi, it was a tough choice selecting a winner from among ten promising fashion talents.

In the end, it was Christoph Rumpf who won the day, ahead of Dita Enikova (Latvia), the designer trio of Tetsuya Doi, Youta Anazawa & Manami Toda (Japan), Emilia Kuurila (Finland), Milla Lintilä (Finland), Yana Monk (Russia), Roísín Pierce (Ireland), Tina Schwizgebel (Switzerland), Tsung-Chien Tang (Taiwan) and Lucille Thievre (France). Tina Schwizgebel-Wang was awarded this year’s Chloé Prize by Natacha Ramsay-Levi.

The Grand Prix du Jury Première Vision at the International Festival of Fashion, Photography, and Fashion Accessories in Hyères serves as a springboard for young designers headed for international success.

The winner can look forward to prize money of 20,000 euros from Première Vision, an opportunity to work with CHANEL’s Métiers d’Art, a joint project with Petit Bateau valued at 10,000 euros to create one or more items for the brand and the chance to visit Swarovski’s headquarters and archives in Austria.

This year, Mercedes-Benz has additionally promised that the prize winner will be invited to show their collection at the MBFW in July. Mercedes-Benz will cover all the related costs and provide know-how for the purposes of preparing the show.

The New Métiers d’Art Prize at the 2019 Hyères Festival

A loyal partner of the International Festival of Fashion, Photography and Fashion Accessories in Hyères since 2014, CHANEL brought together members of the jury and friends of the House at its annual dinner. Guests were treated to a private concert by Clara Luciani who was dressed in CHANEL for the occasion.

“I want to be a part of what’s happening”, Mademoiselle Chanel once said. For this 34th edition of the Hyères Festival, that’s the avant-garde spirit CHANEL cultivates by reinforcing its support of young talent through the launch of the Métiers d’art Prize. For 2019, each of the ten fashion designers in competition had a chance to develop a project in collaboration with one of ten houses from CHANEL’s Métiers d’art: Desrues, Ateliers de Verneuil-en-Halatte, Lemarié, Maison Michel, Massaro, Lesage, Goossens, Montex, Causse and Lognon.

A chance for young talents to push the limits of design, this prize was awarded to the best collaboration following the fashion shows. The winner takes home a trophy designed by the goldsmith Goossens and receives the opportunity to produce, with CHANEL’s mentorship, a new creation that will be revealed next year at the 35th edition of the festival.
