In 2019, Meissen, Europe’s oldest porcelain manufactory, honours the traditional genre of bird painting on porcelain. Meissen’s classical images and patterns are revisited and applied to both modern and historical service and object designs.

The collection ranges from sleek, minimalist services and mugs to wall paintings and modern home décor all the way to historic basket-weave vases, lidded boxes, and magnificent vessels that have been reissued for the first time this year.

The tradition of bird painting at Meissen reaches back to the early 18th century. In the beginning, Meissen’s porcelain painters painted stylised images of birds inspired be Eastern Asian porcelain designs. At the same time that chinoiseries began to fall out of fashion, the manufactory’s designs were changing as well: Meissen’s artists increasingly turned to more realistic, naturalistic depictions of native and exotic plants and animals that took their cues from scientific drawings.

In 1733, Johann Joachim Kaendler approved the purchase of 56 copperplate engravings depicting a wide range of birds to be used at the manufactory as a basis for new designs. These images would be used in countless porcelain artworks and motifs starting in the 1740s. the period of “ornithological motifs” may have been brief; however, time and time again, artists
have returned to the extensive design archives ever since, and continue to create innovative new designs and reinterpretations that incorporate the artistic style of their era.

The basket-weave vases are breathing new life into vase designs from 1753 with images of exotic bird species in brilliant colours upon textured porcelain. Or the “Aviary” tea caddy design by Paul Scheurich from 1930, where birds are depicted in traditional grisaille style – lively poses captured against a white background. Otto Drögsler’s renewal of the 20th century piece includes lattice detailing, placed over the enchanting scene and making the piece reminiscent of a bird cage.

After Iris Apfel in 2016 and Loïc Prigent in 2017, Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche has invited the creative trio Mosaert to the iconic Parisian store. The Brussels-based Mosaert collective – Paul Van Haver aka Stromae, fashion designer Coralie Barbier and artistic director Luc Junior Tam – has crafted a fantastical pop-up store featuring its Capsule 5 collection. The Mosaert Fabrique is a fun fantasy factory that illustrates the production process behind a unisex capsule collection, along with home décor items.

Playing with industrial codes – factory pipes painted white with golden details, sales assistants wearing jumpsuits – the first installation on the rue de Babylone side features clothes parading on rails. The second on rue de Sèvres presents a video installation and a song created specially by Stromae for the launch of Capsule 5.

T-shirts, teddies and socks are decked out with arabesques, butterflies and plants typical of the Art Deco and Art Nouveau currents, updated with punchy colors to create graphic prints. Mosaert’s basics see the addition of several new items: shorts, a faux fur bomber jacket, a teddy bomber jacket, six T-shirts, two jogger suits and a knitted sweater. For the first time, fashion wear is joined by home décor items with linen, cushions, crockery and even an armchair. Le Bon Marché has created a collection of its own inspired by Capsule 5 with a candle, notebook, tote bag and purse, plus iconic products from La Grande Epicerie reprising Mosaert prints.

Atelier Notify, the luxury denim brand, launched a customisation area at Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche in April 2016. Following a meeting between their team and Mosaert, Mosaert decided to collaborate on two types of products that would complete capsule no 5: two velvets caps and three pairs of flip-flops.

Discover the installation and the collection at Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche until May 13. All clothes are unisex and produced in limited quantities, exclusively in Europe.
