The upcoming Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este is dedicated to some major anniversaries. At the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2021, Ferrari 250 GT TDF won the Trofeo BMW Group.

From 20 to 22 May 2022, BMW Group Classic and the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este will be showcasing the world’s most exclusive and traditional Concours d’Elegance for historic cars.

The Grand Hotel Villa d’Este is celebrating its 150th season and looking back on especially gorgeous winners of the prestigious Coppa d’Oro Villa d’Este and “Best of Show” trophy since 1929 in a separate ranking category.

The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este is always a spectacular event where rare historic cars are presented against the backdrop of Lake Como in Cernobbio. The October 2021 edition of the world’s most prestigious event for historic vehicles was particularly exclusive. After an unintentionally long break, this was the first opportunity for all participants to finally experience the revitalising energy and joy of being there together, something that only happens when you can meet in person.

The prep time for the next edition of the Concours d’Elegance Villa d’Este, which will take place from 20 to 22 May 2022, was extraordinarily short since this year’s competition had been moved to autumn.

This traditional beauty contest is organised jointly by BMW Group Classic and the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este. In 2022, around 50 classic cars with their own special history will once again compete for victory in their category as well as for the Coppa d’Oro Villa d’Este and the coveted Trofeo BMW Group for “Best of Show”.

Exceptionally beautiful and elegant cars were first presented as part of a competition on Grand Hotel Villa d’Este premises in 1929. However, the venue’s tradition goes back even further. The iconic Grand Hotel Villa d’Este on Lake Como was built as a cardinal residence in the 16th century. This stunning property was transformed into a luxury hotel in 1873, becoming a magical place celebrated all over the world.

In 2022, the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este will enter its 150th season. The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este will celebrate this special anniversary with a separate vehicle category.

Under the motto “And the Winner Is…: A Celebration of Villa d’Este’s 150th Season”, vehicles that have been the winners of the prestigious and historical Coppa d’Oro Villa d’Este or the coveted “Best of Show” since the first event in 1929 will be on exhibit.

The “The Carriage Becomes a Car” category is devoted to the exciting transformation that took place in the early years of the motorcar around 120 years ago. After all, the first motorised vehicles did not yet have any examples to look to except for the usual means of contemporary transport, like the horse-drawn carriage. In the first three decades, engineers worked hard, and at an ever increasing pace, to reach new milestones and achieve the best performance. This made design more and more challenging.

By the end of the 1920s, the car featured a growing number of functions and had become an impressively designed object that was shaping its time. Looking back on how this developed promises to be both remarkable and eye-opening.

With the technological foundation successfully laid out, designers in the following decade were able to specialise in their work and concentrate on new, distinct areas. The “Speed Shapes Form” category focuses on particularly sophisticated and aerodynamically-optimised body designs from 1930 to 1940.

Their lines became more and more streamlined and aimed at speed, a trend that was strongly influenced by aviation, an emerging sector at the time. With the futuristic style of these vehicles, the 2022 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este is also looking back on a decade of brilliant engineering.

The 2022 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este will be celebrating another anniversary with a special look at the Ferrari brand. This Italian car manufacturer will be celebrating its 75th anniversary. The extraordinary history of this brand will come to life with its own competition category: “The Cavallino at 75: Eight Decades of Ferrari Represented in Eight Icons”. Each vehicle will thus represent the vision of its decade and the technological excellence behind its creation. In addition, special models from the recent past, each bearing the legendary “Cavallino Rampante” (prancing horse) symbol, will be exhibited for the first time.

The third anniversary being celebrated at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este is for a company that is intimately linked to motorsport. BMW Motorsport GmbH was in fact founded 50 years ago. Today, this BMW Group subsidiary is known as BMW M GmbH. Its first independently developed vehicle, named the BMW M1 and introduced in 1978, was a milestone in its history. BMW M GmbH continued its impressive history by then designing engines for Formula 1 and developing the most successful touring car in the history of motorsport, the BMW M3. The 2022 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este will chronicle this story with the competition category titled “Mean Machinery: 50 Years of BMW M”.

Speed has always had a magical effect on automotive aficionados. Since the invention of the motorcar, higher top speeds have always been regarded as a sign of technological progress and a key to success.

After having exceeded top speeds of 150 km/h relatively early, it took considerable engineering skill to reach and exceed 300 km/h.

These technological achievements were awarded with their own category under the title “Breaking the Speed Barrier! The First Machines to Cross the 300 kph Threshold” at the 2022 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.

The 2021 Goodwood Revival: An epic return

The Goodwood Revival is the world’s greatest historic motor race meeting, and the only sporting event of its kind to be staged entirely in a period theme. More than just an unrivalled weekend of historic racing, it is an immersive celebration of a less disposable world, where “make do and mend” was a way of life rather than a casual slogan.

The Goodwood Motor Circuit has closed its gates after the epic return of the Goodwood Revival to West Sussex this weekend. The world’s greatest weekend of historic racing was accompanied by fabulous vintage fashion, glorious sunshine – for the most part! – and an incredible atmosphere as visitors revelled in the Revival’s return.

On track highlights included the sunset Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy which was won by the E-type of Harvey Stanley and James Cottingham, while the all-Mini John Whitmore Trophy on Saturday morning in which the Mini wrapped in SpeedWeek winner Stanley Wilkinson’s design triumphed with Nick Swift and Andrew Jordan behind the wheel. The epic Royal Automobile Club TT Celebration on Sunday afternoon was won by Ollie Bryant and Darren Turner in the Bryant family’s AC Cobra in what was a dramatic race. The hotly-contested Settrington Cup, saw dozens of children take to the Pit Lane Straight in their Austin J40 pedal cars in a furious dash to take the chequered flag.

A host of famous faces including Jason Momoa, Hugh Bonneville and John Bishop enjoyed the weekend’s action as legendary drivers including Sir Jackie Stewart, Jenson Button, Jean-Éric Vergne, André Lotterer, Emanuele Pirro, Maria Costello, Damon Hill and Derek Bell took to the track.

Goodwood celebrated the life and career of Sir Stirling Moss with a track parade each day, including on Saturday – which was the anniversary of his debut race in 1948. With tributes paid by Derek Bell, Sir Jackie Stewart, Damon Hill and the Duke of Richmond, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR in which Moss and Denis Jenkinson won the 1955 Mille Miglia took the trap.

Bonhams held their first Revival sale in two years and the auction was hailed a big success with almost three quarters of all the lots selling. The biggest sale of the day went to Revival-racer Valentine Lindsay’s Jaguar D-type, among the most well known and most campaigned D-types around. A 1956 short nose whose components parts were disassembled in period and then brought back together again in the 1980s, it sold for £799,000 including the premium.

British Racing Motors celebrated the 70th anniversary of their first appearance on a Grand Prix grid, as the largest ever assemblage of BRMs took to the Circuit for a series of Track Parades across the weekend. Friday, saw the unveiling of the marque’s “new” V16, an exact recreation of the original.

The new Make-Do and Mend area proved popular with guests across the weekend, with talks and appearances from Richard Hammond about his new restoration workshop The Smallest Cog, TV personality Dominic Chinea, Vanessa Jacobs from The Restory, and the event’s Style Adviser Bay Garnett. Visitors were also able to take part in a series of workshops, which included making their own vintage headband and knickers.

On Sunday, Sir Chris Hoy led 150 vintage cyclists in a lap of the Goodwood Motor Circuit following the launch of the Eroica Britannia cycling festival at Goodwood. The inaugural Eroica Britannia event will take place next year on Saturday 6 – Sunday 7 August.

Sunday’s spectacular recreation of the 1946 London Victory Parade, saw 250 local key workers and service personnel lead over 150 historic military vehicles down the Pit Lane Straight. The Duke of Richmond gave a speech, thanking the participants for their selfless service.

The Revival’s inaugural Car Boot Sale also went live on the Sunday, which welcomed almost thirty vendors including Liberty, The Circle, EarlyBird Club and The Circle of Style, guests were treated to a treasure trove of vintage designer clothes, homeware, books and trinkets.

“I loved the car boot sale! Such great things to see and buy, I even bought myself a gorgeous jacket from the 1970s,” said Bay Garnett, Revival Style Adviser and Car Boot Sale judge. The Best in Show was awarded by Garnett to Kate Keamena and her team, who had a stunning array of clothes and accessories.

For those who couldn’t make this year’s event, they can catch up on the highlights programmes on ITV and the ITV Hub.

Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este hopes to hold the event in October

The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este enjoys a long-standing reputation as one of the most sophisticated and exclusive events in the classic car segment.

Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2020 postponed to October 2020. The team continues to monitor the development of the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) and expect a final confirmation this June.

In light of current events and growing measures to contain the coronavirus, the Organisation Team of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este has decided not to proceed with this year’s edition on the planned dates (22nd to 24th May, 2020). Instead, the organizers plan to hold the luxury automotive event from October 16th to 18th, 2020.

“Our aim is to always meet this aspiration. However, current circumstances make it impossible for us to guarantee the calibre of event that you have come to expect this coming May. Our early cancellation for May will hopefully make planning easier for our many overseas guests, knowing they have longer lead times for logistics, travel arrangements, etc. ” said the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este team.

The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este owes its privileged status among the world’s most prestigious heritage events for historic vehicles to a number of unique attributes. These include the elegance of the event, its long and illustrious tradition, the unrivalled flair experienced at the majestic Grand Hotel Villa d’Este on the shores of Lake Como and the small, select groups of participants.

The Grand Hotel Villa d’Este is one of the world’s most iconic hotels.

In 2020, the field of participants will again be presented in eight special classes. The Selecting Committee presents the first four classes of the Historic Cars for the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2020: Hypercars of the 1990s; Pre-war Roadsters; Cops and Robbers: Fast cars from both sides of the Law; From Swinging Sixties to Awesome Eighties: Two Decades of Endurance Racing.

And let’s not forget the Concorso di Motociclette, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2020. Across the world, there is virtually no other opportunity to experience rare two-wheelers of this quality at a single venue. The motorcycles tell their own stories and symbolise the lifeblood of their owners, who have invested so much care in these eye witnesses to the development of motorised transport.

In 2020, the beauty contest for Historic Motorcycles in the grounds of Villa Erba will once more include six motorcycle classes. The Selecting Committee presents the following classes for the Concorso di Motociclette 2020: More Wheels: Early Attempts for a Passenger Ride; Boxers of the Early 1920s; American Greats; Styling the 1950s; The Motorcycle Work of Lino Tonti (1920 – 2002); Concept Bikes: New Design and Prototypes by Manufacturers and Independents.
