Maria Grazia Chiuri’s creations for this Dior cruise show celebrate multiple visions of femininity in a dialogue inspired by craft between Dior ateliers and Spanish artisans.

Decked out in red flowers, Sevilla’s Plaza de España provided a spectacular backdrop for the Cruise 2023 collection designed by Maria Grazia Chiuri, Artistic Director for Dior Women’s collections. An ode to the creativity and beauty of gestures, the new wardrobe celebrates Andalusian culture and savoir-faire.

From the spring-summer 1956 haute couture Bal à Séville dress designed by Christian Dior, to the Plaza de España – built for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition – the collection embraces the richness of the cultures that have shaped Spain.

Dancer Carmen Amaya, known as La Capitana, is the icon of the new collection. With her revolutionary movements, she was the first Flamenco dancer to perform in men’s clothing, embodying a plural femininity.

The emblematic Manila shawl meets Andalusian horsemen’s pants and short jackets adorned with brandebourg closures. Mantillas are elevated with exquisite embroidery, joined by men’s pinstripe suits and trimmed boleros. Shimmering taffeta in red, yellow, ocher and black is sculpted into exuberant skirts, while lace appears in manifold forms. The emblematic Dior Bar jacket is reinvented in black velvet embroidered with gold threads.

With a specialist expertise stretching back to 1885, Fernández y Roche is an institution when it comes to hats in Andalusia, and an obvious choice for Maria Grazia Chiuri and the House’s millinery maestro Stephen Jones when it came to collaborating on the creation of the classic styles given a Panama twist for the Cruise 2023 on.dior.com/cruise-23 show in Seville.

Dior’s makeup director Peter Philips focused on a smoky eye featuring a defined lash line with Diorshow 24H Stylo, luminous black anthracite shades from the 5 Couleurs Couture eyeshadow palette and the iconic Diorshow Iconic Overcurl mascara on the upper lashes.

In the Spanish city of Córdoba, which boasts a long leatherwork association, the Meryan atelier employed its specialized skills to interpret designs by regular House collaborator Pietro Ruffo on leather panels that were embossed, sculpted and painted in order to cover a trunk custom made for the unveiling of the Cruise 2023 collection.
