One cold, bright morning in January, I stood in a field in Gloucestershire with my eyes closed and imagined I had four legs. Just metres away was a herd of eight horses. Before meeting them, advised therapist Lisanne Peters, it was wise to meditate. First, she told me to focus on sensations – the smell of hay; the birdsong. Then she instructed me to imagine myself, centaur-like, “with another back and another set of legs behind you. Feel how sturdy, how grounded, you are.”

This was the beginning of my equine therapy experience. I have never been a horse person but recently surprised myself by wanting to try it. Perhaps it was because I have felt as though lately I see horses everywhere, particularly in fashion. Gucci’s latest ad campaign, for example, imagines horses integrated in urban lives: models feed them in the supermarket and hose their hooves off with water on petrol station forecourts.

At couture fashion week, in January, during the Franck Sorbier collection, two horses appeared on a catwalk flanked by hay bales. On the high street, Uniqlo promoted its collaboration with Inès de la Fressange with a picture of the French style arbiter walking a majestic, milk-white horse down a windswept beach. In menswear, the Charles Jeffrey Loverboy show was inspired by the Orkneys’ 200-year-old pagan ritual, the Festival of the Horse. Fashion’s most powerful models – Bella and Gigi Hadid – are avowed horse girls who post frequent selfies nuzzling long noses.

Last summer, Maison Margiela’s couture show was dedicated to “a horse called Blue” that creative director John Galliano had met during three months of equine therapy in Arizona. This memory had bubbled up now, he said, in a podcast accompanying the show, because “I feel as though we are going through a survival mood and perhaps needing to revert back to trusting our instincts. You can’t lie to a horse, it’s so sensitive; it feels any anxiety or fear.”

Blinkers now off, I started to see the cowboy trend as a romanticisation of a time when human lives were enmeshed with horses’. It felt as though something was ahoof in the collective subconscious. I began to notice “equine therapy” briefly mentioned in spa break features in Vogue and in press releases for luxury retreats.

Like “forest bathing” and other increasingly popular eco-therapies, equine therapy speaks to an interest in getting back to something fundamental. After all, humans lived with horses for thousands of years – it was only the advent of the motorcar that separated us. “They have been alongside us in evolution always,” Peters says. “There is that quote: ‘History is strewn with the bones of a horse.’” The connection, she believes, “is something very ancient that we need to get back to”.

To be clear, while equine therapy might sound kooky and alternative, it has very serious applications. Peters’ centre – the Red Horse Foundation – specialises in trauma. Equine therapy is often used for addiction and to help children with autism and veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder. Research is in its infancy (a 2015 paper reported that the studies so far are promising but limited) but it is available, in certain counties, on the NHS and through well-respected mental health centres. It’s worth noting, too – not least for the sake of safety – that Peters would not advise trying it out anywhere that does not have deep specialist knowledge.

Still, Peters believes it can be useful for everyone, whether for leadership, team-building, anxiety or self-esteem: “It helps us to take control of our lives and our selves, like meditation, rather than letting external things take control of you – the horse is a master teacher for that.”

Horses “are not goal oriented”, she explains. “They don’t have the frontal cortex over-thinking.” And as prey animals, relying on instinct for survival, they are “living biofeedback machines”, she says: “They can tell if you are not being authentic – if you are behaving one way but feeling another.” Great “horse people”, she says, can align “thinking, feeling and action – we call it becoming congruent” – at which point a horse will do anything for you.

So far, my own equine therapy experience has given me plenty to chew on; there were more metaphors and lessons for my busy life, overseeing the Guardian’s fashion desk, than I could shake a riding crop at.

I made a sub-City Slickers entrance for my first session, arriving at the tranquil centre demanding an iPhone charger and insisting I make an important phone call before we start. Twenty minutes later, however, within the field of horses, it was impossible not to slow down.

Peters invites me to observe how peaceful the horses are, just being, just living. She asks if there are any I am drawn to and would like to meet. At first, they all look like horses to me. But gradually, I differentiate them. I choose a huge chesnut mare and try to say hi; she walks away, to another pile of hay. (I try not to think: “But of course I am such a charisma vacuum that even a horse would not want to hang out with me.”) Eventually, I approach slowly from the side, on Peters’ advice. The horse turns her nose towards my fist; I stroke her. “Now you have done a horse greeting,” Peters says.

Much of my experience is like this: simply moving among the herd as though I am one of them. It takes some time for me to stop trying to smile; to dispense with social niceties. It also takes time to stop feeling a bit judged when they appraise me based on my non-verbal cues, and walk away. It feels a bit like the way a PR with a clipboard at fashion week might coolly assess my status judging by my footwear and find me lacking. Gradually, though, I learn to be less person about it. Status anxiety is not very horse, after all. They accept what happens and move on. As I start to do the same, they seem happier to be around me.

My next session is more active – and hugely illuminating. I try to lead the alpha male, Brannan, around the paddock. I assume he will play ball – I’ve seen this sort of thing on TV – but he doesn’t. As he resists, I feel a familiar sensation of not being entirely comfortable telling others what to do, something I can hide behind smiles at work. Brannan, however, reads me like a book. He ends up leading me, instead, back to the paddock entrance. I try again. He demures. Later, Peters advises me that this kind of exercise is “all about having an intention – knowing where you want to go. It’s about being comfortable with being the leader.” All of which sounds familiar.

I’m surprised by how powerful hanging out with horses has been, and how clearly, and wordlessly, Brannan laid bare one of my issues. I’m not finished with him yet: I’ll be back for another session and will try to lead him again. With Peters’ help I’m sure I will succeed. I’ll be able to stand on my own feet once I’ve cracked it. All four of them.

Burberry showcases modern equestrian chic at London fashion week

The finale of the #BurberryAutumnWinter20 show, titled ‘Memories’. Set in West London, models walked a raised mirror runway to a unique performance by Arca and classical duo Katia and Marielle Labèque; @burberry

“London is the place where I learned to be myself and a city where I gained the confidence to be the man that I am today,” said Riccardo Tisci, the chief creative officer of Burberry, before his London fashion week show on Monday. “Now I want to share British style with the world and use this incredible heritage to build and humanise the house.”

Burberry, British luxury fashion’s marquee name, could use a boost in morale. London is Burberry’s home, but its commercial heartbeat is now in Asia. With Chinese customers accounting for 40% of Burberry revenues, the brand is one of those that has been hit hardest by the economic impact of coronavirus.

With a troupe of expensive supermodels, Tisci’s fourth season at Burberry was a slick cheerleading routine for the blue-blooded glamour that flows through the label’s veins. In the Victorian pomp of Kensington Olympia, where the iron ribs spanning the vaulted ceiling soar above the mirrored catwalk like the skeleton of a blue whale, a grand piano was the centrepiece for a dressage parade of modern equestrian chic. This season’s look was a more globally bankable take on Burberry than Tisci’s punk- and rave-referencing, subculture-themed collections of last year.

Tisci has made Burberry sexy where his predecessor Christopher Bailey made it romantic. His equestrian silhouette owed as much to Jilly Cooper as to the Grand National. Gigi Hadid wore high, tight jodhpurs tucked into glossy boots. Blazers had nipped waists, and trenchcoats were reinvented as slippery satin dresses with multiple unfastenings. The Victorian architecture of the venue was echoed in corsetry outlines on evening wear, while quilted nylon stable-hand jackets looked a strong commercial offer for the more street-orientated Burberry customer. This was a collection tailored to helping Burberry weather the current economic storm.

More than a third of the label’s 64 stores in mainland China have been closed since the coronavirus outbreak hit the region. This month, the company’s chief executive, Marco Gobbetti, acknowledged the material negative effect of the outbreak on luxury demand. It is a further blow to Burberry, already hit hard by the effect on retail of anti-government protests in Hong Kong, where its sales in the final quarter of 2019 were down 50% on the previous year.

This London fashion week show had been scheduled to be reprised in Shanghai, on 23 April, at an event for Chinese press, influencers and clients that would have featured the same clothes alongside exclusive additional looks for Chinese Burberry customers. When the Shanghai show was announced, Tisci described China as “a country that has always been so supportive of me” and Shanghai as “one of the most innovative and inspiring cities in the world”. The event has been postponed indefinitely.

At the day’s earlier shows by Erdem and at JW Anderson, the 1920s made a comeback. Shawl-collared tuxedos of the roaring 20s inspired the wing-collared padded coats at JW Anderson, which he called “nouveau chic”.

Erdem, whose modernist flamboyant gowns are a feature of the art-fair social scene, worked with Robin Muir, the curator of the National Portrait Gallery’s upcoming exhibition about Cecil Beaton, to develop themes from the exhibition on his catwalk.

“Beaton was truly experimental – so much more than a society photographer,” said Erdem backstage in front of a mood board showing the teenage Beaton’s early stage sets in which he dressed up his sisters and himself in 20s gowns against makeshift backdrops. On the catwalk, Beaton’s own leopard-print dressing gown became a camel coat embroidered with seed pearls clustered into tiny paw-print motifs.

Five million euros Pagani Imola: Limited-run, just five models built, all sold

Pagani Automobili unveiled a new roadworthy hypercar with a wholly racing temperament.

pagani imola; @pagani automobili

The new hypercar is named after the Imola racetrack on which it was modeled and fine-tuned. Imola is a sacred place for car enthusiasts.

“With a limited edition of only five examples built, the Pagani Imola has gone through the severest on-track validation test ever applied to a Pagani car,” revealed Pagani Automobili. “In addition to the regular and already scrupulous validation process, in fact, Imola has covered over 16,000 km on the track at racing speed – the equivalent to about three times the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

It’s a fast, difficult, technical circuit that has always separated the wheat from the chaff, in terms of both men and machines. A circuit that has made the fastest drivers faster, one that has given rise to fierce duels between opponents and gentlemen, and where the sweetest victories and bitterest tragedies have been witnessed. A circuit in the Motor Valley of Emilia Romagna. A place that has given so much to the automotive industry. That has given so much to Pagani” Horacio Pagani, Founder and Chief Designer of Pagani Automobili.

“The aerodynamic technology behind the Pagani Imola is evident in three of its key features. The general outline, the internal aerodynamics and the external aerodynamic details, such as the fins, winglets and deflectors”, explained Horacio Pagani, Founder and Chief Designer of Pagani Automobili. “We can’t say that it’s an elegant car. We wanted an efficient vehicle, and just as you’d expect if you were looking at an F1 single-seater, this led us to design a car with additional aerodynamic features.

The Pagani Imola is a vehicle-laboratory where important innovations have been devised, tested and developed. Some of these have been used in the Roadster BC and will be a feature of Pagani’s future creations.

The new formula of the Carbo-Titanium HP62 G2 and Carbo-Triax HP62, developed for the ultra-reinforced central monocoque of the Pagani Imola and Roadster BC, was created to reduce weight while increasing torsional and bending stiffness. Pagani Imola takes the fanatical attention to weight-saving to new heights, with the introduction of Acquarello Light, a new bespoke painting system that represents a further evolution of Pagani’s advanced state of the art, allowing to reduce the weight of the paint by 5 kg while maintaining color richness, depth and shine unchanged.

pagani imola; @pagani automobili

The extreme research for weight saving conducted by Pagani over the years has led to the increasingly extensive use of noble alloys, such as those of aluminum, titanium and chrome-molybdenum steel, allowing a general optimization in terms of mechanical properties and lightness and a greater aesthetic experimentation. On the newborn Pagani Imola the effort involved more than 770 forged or CNC-machined components, this time featuring the newly developed texture-look finish specifically applied to the aluminum alloy parts. The innovative braking system built by Brembo has been optimized, through intensive aerodynamic study and countless dedicated tests, to further improve the entire cooling system. Working with Pirelli and the newly
created Next MIRS system, we developed tires for a vehicle that would provide excellent performance on track but would also be “communicative” and easy to drive, in true Pagani style.

Since the luxury automotive company could test drive on track at different temperatures and track surface conditions, the team was able to try out new solutions. For instance, fitting semi-slick tires allowed Pagani to subject different parts of the car to stress that far exceeded – with respect to the suspensions and lateral forces – the stress sustained when road tires are used.
