A one-off Maserati-branded Bond was auctioned for Action Medical Research.

Maserati Cipollini BOND road bike

A new design partnership pairs two iconic Italian brands with speed and style at their heart. To celebrate its collaboration with the inaugural Rouleur Classic event, luxury car maker Maserati has teamed up with Italian high-performance bike brand, Cipollini to create a one-of-a-kind Maserati Cipollini BOND road bike. The Cipollini BOND frame is painted in Maserati blue and white and features Rouleur Classic and Maserati branding, including the Maserati trident in red on either side of the seat tube.

Cipollini Bond, the first “not integrated monocoque” made by Cipollini, has a revolutionary patented construction system with front monocoque triangle + rear axle fitting called Atomlink. It allows great reactivity and power transfer to the ground, comparable to the best monocoques. Comfortable despite being aggressive and rigid, it is precise and elastic when descending. Aesthetically elegant, it also stands out in terms of sturdiness and great resistance to stresses. The frame is unbeatable in its segment.

The stunning bike, which was signed at the show by Mario Cipollini, was centrepiece of the Maserati Lounge, where visitors were invited to join a silent auction to win the bike and raise money for Action Medical Research.

“To pair two such like-minded Italian brands was an opportunity not to miss, and the Rouleur Classic is the perfect place to show the bike and hopefully raise a lot of money for charity. The lucky winner will be the owner of a truly unique bike,” commented Mario Cipollini, owner of Cipollini bikes.

‘When we started our Maserati Cycling initiative it was with the aim of enhancing the experience of the cycling community through our brand’s involvement in a series of unique and exciting cycling events. The vision behind the Rouleur Classic is absolutely complementary to what we are looking to achieve, and the show promises to become a must-attend destination for the discerning road cyclist,” said Peter Denton, Region Manager for Maserati Northern Europe.

‘We hope our partnership with Cipollini will add another interesting element to the event. To be able to produce a truly one-of-a-kind Maserati Cipollini road bike which will allow us to raise money for a great charity like Action Medical Research is fantastic. The bike is a beautiful piece of design and represents perfectly the style, tradition and quality that Maserati stands for,” added Denton.

The technical specification of the bike, with a RRP of £4500, comprises an Ultegra mechanical groupset, Selle San Marco Aspide racing saddle and a Fast Forward F2A alloy clincher wheelset.

The inaugural Rouleur Classic event took place 19 – 21 November 2015 at Vinopolis, London, offering visitors the very best in road cycling.

The Aster Yosegi Wood Limited Edition by Vertu

A new addition to the Vertu Aster collection. The marriage of a revered and ancient Japanese craft with a quintessentially English smartphone – Vertu Aster.

Vertu - Aster Yosegi Wood limited edition luxury phone-

Luxury smartphone creator Vertu continues to pioneer the use of innovative and high-performance materials with a new limited edition called Aster Yosegi Wood. The new luxury phone fused traditional Japanese art with British craftsmanship. The model joins Calf, Ostrich, Stingray, Python, Alligator and Quilt in adorning Vertu Aster.

Yosegi woodcraft is a form of traditional Japanese marquetry which originated over 200 years ago during Japan’s culturally rich Edo Period. Wooden strips made of Basswood dyed in different colours are carefully laminated together to form an oblong rod. Many rods are combined to form a large wooden block. The master craftsman then delicately shaves off a veneer layer, which showcases the intricate pattern that is characteristic of Yosegi.

To create the protective gloss finish on the veneer, up to six layers of lacquer are hand applied by master craftsman with repeated sanding and polishing, resulting in the exceptionally tough and beautiful glossy surface. This notoriously difficult and laborious process is shrouded in secrecy, says Vertu. Only the most highly trained and dedicated Japanese craftsman are privilege to the nuances of the process.

“Extraordinary materials have always formed a fundamental part of the Vertu story. They differentiate our products from any other technology brand out there. But there are multiple challenges to overcome when using luxury materials on a mobile technology product,” explains Vertu Head of Design Hutch Hutchison.

“One issue is size; on a phone every 0.1mm counts. The technical functionality of the product itself is also something we need to keep in mind; we can’t use conductive materials in most areas of the product as they could disturb the antenna performance. All our materials need to meet the difficult balance between a luxury look and feel, robustness and quality, after all, a mobile phone is used almost 24/7 so our devices have to be able to withstand a great deal; our quality standards for every material we use have to be extremely high,” added Hutchison.

“The idea to use wood for a special edition is kind of a natural progression to me: it is a luxury material, it is a natural growing resource, you can create beautiful patterns and designs with it… and it also fulfils all of our technical needs, it is light, non-conductive, strong and durable,” continued Hutchison.

Vertu selected a Checkerboard (Ichimatsu-Ajiro) Yosegi pattern which combines traditional designs deriving from bamboo weaves and fishnets. This matches the current trend for woven materials which can be seen across all industries, from fashion accessories to interior design and architecture.

Limited to 50 units, the Aster Yosegi Wood phone comes with a beige and black calf leather case. It is lined with luxurious suede leather and is adorned with an embossed pattern echoing the black lines of the pattern of the wood marquetry.

Vertu has worked with Hasselblad, the world’s most renowned professional photography brand, to perfect the image tuning of the Aster camera. The Hasselblad-certified 13mp rear camera has a sapphire crystal lens and anti-reflection coating, while the front facing camera facilitates video calling. The 4.7” full HD display has a resolution of 473ppi and is protected by the 5.1” sapphire crystal screen.

A. Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk Minute Repeater – what you hear is what you see

A. Lange & Söhne – The perfect sound of time or how to experience the sound and mechanism of the decimal minute repeater.

a-lange-sohne-the-perfect-sound-of-time--watch

The 2015 Zeitwerk Minute Repeater watch unveiled by celebrated Swiss luxury watch manufacture A. Lange & Söhne for its 200th anniversary celebrates musical harmony, the perfection of sound, and the musical instruments crafted in Saxony for centuries, especially around the town of Markneukirchen in the Vogtlandkreis district.

As A. Lange & Söhne’s master makers intended, the new horological work of art achieves perfect sonority offering an exceptional music experience.  The new timepiecs is a fine-tuned mechanical musical instrument for the wrist where what you hear is what you see (see the movie above with the working principle).

“In a chiming watch, as in musical instruments, the physical laws that govern acoustic phenomena are key to achieving sounds of superior quality and reverberant volume. The case material, the size and shape of the gongs, the way they are secured to the movement, the number of moving parts – every detail counts,” says A. Lange & Sohne. The mechanism chimes a low-pitched tone for each hour, a double tone for each elapsed ten-minute period, and a high-pitched tone for each elapsed minute. The time as sounded corresponds exactly to the time as displayed.

Special measuring technologies and a musically trained ear are essential in the development of a minute repeater for optimising the individual acoustic parameters down to the finest of nuances. It begins with loudness. The volume of the sound must be perceptible but not overbearing. Its fullness and purity must be compelling to the connoisseur. The rhythm and cadence of the sounds should express pleasant musicality. The gongs must harmonize perfectly with one another. All the while, any chatter of the striking mechanism must be reduced to the absolute minimum.

“It was a formidable challenge for Lange’s product developers to fulfil all of these criteria,” added the team.

As is commonplace for high-end musical instruments, the gongs are tuned exclusively by hand until they thoroughly harmonise with each other. In the end, they both sound full and pure.

After its debut at this year’s SIHH, the 2015 Zeitwerk Minute Repeater has now been awarded the first prize at the “Premio Tiempo
de Relojes 2015” in the category for high-complication watches – “Alta complicación”.
