Sardinia put on her best show: My Song and Savannah took the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta Trophies

The yachts participating in the 2018 Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta had to wait a few days, but in the end the typical mistral wind and the Sardinian sunshine made the final day of the 11th edition of the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta unique.

The 11th edition of Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda with the support of Loro Piana, saw My Song triumph in class A and Savannah, on her debut in this regatta, take victory in class B.

As scheduled, at 11.30 a.m. on the waters off Porto Cervo the Race Committee, led by Peter Craig, began the starting sequence starting for the coastal race of about 31 miles around the islands of the La Maddalena archipelago. A mistral wind was blowing at 22 knots which fell slightly to 20 knots over the course of the race. The superyachts started from Porto Cervo, circumnavigated the islands of Caprera and La Maddalena to port and left the Secca di Tre Monti to port before leaving the Monaci islets to starboard and returning to Porto Cervo.

Class B saw a spirited battle, where the “little” Savannah, an elegant Spirit of Tradition yacht of 27 metres, scored a hat-trick, beating the 46-metre Ganesha once again, this time by just 33 seconds. “It’s great to win, it’s a wonderful regatta and the best location in the world.” commented Savannah’s owner, Hugh Morrison. “We had very good breeze today, very good conditions, flatseas and it was really very impressive to see all the other boats catching up with us.” Third place in class B went to Escapade.

Ganesha crossed the finish line first in real time followed by My Song by just 1 minute and 53 seconds, who had started 15 minutes behind Ganesha due to being the fastest boat in the fleet and therefore the final one in the starting sequence.

Class A also saw a hat-trick as My Song notched up her third victory while her direct rivals suffered various problems and equipment failures. The 148-footer Saudade withdrew just minutes from the start due to a problem with her foresails, while Inoui remained in port. Highland Fling, which yesterday collided with a submerged, unmapped rock, sailed for Palma de Mallorca for the necessary assessments.

In class A, My Song was joined on the podium by Marco Vogele’s Inoui and Saudade, owned by Albert Buell. TheSilver Jubilee Trophy, reserved for the top superyacht from both classes over 100 feet long, went to My Song, which also claimed the award for the top placed yacht owned by a YCCS member.

The Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta 2018 ended with the prize giving in Piazza Azzurra attended by Princess Zahra Aga Khan, President of the YCCS and One Ocean Boards of Directors. Yesterday, on World Oceans Day (June 8, 2018), the Princess took part in the YCCS Clean Beach Day, removing refuse from the Tre Monti beach together with schoolchildren from Arzachena and Cannigione.

Pier Luigi Loro Piana, owner of My Song: “Almost paradoxically I’m sad because such a great event has come to anend. Sardinia in this season is always fantastic, and today has made up to everyone present for the uncertainties of the first few days. I’m also sorry for the many owners who were unable to be present for this edition, and I would like to take this opportunity to invite them here for the next one. Finally, I want to thank my crew for the great job they did on tuning the boat, they deserve the credit for this victory. ”

The next event organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda will be the Audi Invitational Team Racing Challenge from 21 to 23 June.

2017 Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge. The winners.

Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge Official

After five intense days of racing, Mariska, Linnet, Ganbare and Tabasco V were the winners in the 39th edition of the Cannes Régates Royales. The Vintage Yacht Linnet, the Classic Yacht Ganbare and the Big Boat Hallowe’en were also awarded the season’s overall trophies of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge 2017.

Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge is an international circuit reserved for classic and vintage sails. The Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge brings together many of the world’s most spectacular regatta venues in two separate international circuits, spanning everything from the crystal-clear waters of the Antilles to the stunning sea and landscapes of the Mediterranean.

As per tradition, Les Régates Royales de Cannes proved pivotal to deciding the overall winners of the 2017 Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge. After five races held in very light breezes that sorely tested both helmsmen and crews alike, the season trophies were won by Hallowe’en in the Big Boats category, Linnet in the Vintage Yachts category and Ganbare in the Classic Yachts.

Victory proved especially sweet for the crew of Hallowe’en as she finally took the top step on the podium in her 10th year in the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge.

Hallowe’en, launched in 1926 by the legendary Fife shipyard of Fairlie in Scotland, finally took the title of season champion in the Big Boats category. Teak-planked over an English oak frame and inspired by the lines of the great International 15-metre Classes, Hallowe’en set the famous Fastnet record in 1927 and held it until 1939.

As Magda XII, she played host to Prince Olaf, the future King of Norway. She later competed in the US where she also underwent extensive renovations at the Classic Boat Museum in Newport. Her rig has changed several times in the course of her career and she has belonged to a syndicate Irish owners since 1999. This year, Hallowe’en competed in all four rounds of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge Mediterranean Circuit and was manned, by a non-professional crew from Europe, New Zealand and Australia. Her closest rivals were Moonbeam of Fife (1903) and Cambria (1928).

Patrizio Bertelli’s Linnet triumphed in the Vintage category which was also probably the most fiercely- contested grouping with Rowdy, Chinook and Spartan also vying for the top spot in every race. Linnet, for her part, had the honour of being helmed by a slew of legendary sailors in the course of the season, not least Max Sirena and Torben Grael.

The 10th of 18 hulls built by the N.G. Herreshoff yard, Linnet is a NYYC 30 (New York Yacht Club 30), the first cabined bluewater one-design in history. The 30 in the moniker refers to the yacht’s minimum waterline length in feet (one foot being 30.48 centimetres).

The 10.49-metre Bermudan sloop, Ganbare, built from red cedar at the Carl Eichenlaub in San Diego in 1973, made it two in a row when she repeated her 2016 season victory in the Classic Yachts category. This is the first time since 2007 that a yacht has won the category for two consecutive years, providing further confirmation of the brilliance of the design by Californian Doug Peterson, who passed away last June in San Diego.

This year, Ganbare skipped only the Mahon round and at Cannes fended off some very tough competition until the last from the 20-metre Il Moro di Venezia I (1976) and the 11-metre Ardi (1968).
