Penguins, truffles, celebrity chefs and a 75-night lap of a continent: the luxury cruise calendar now runs further ahead than most people’s five-year plans.
If you want to board a premium ship in autumn 2028, congratulations: you are already late. This week’s announcements show an industry that has stopped selling holidays and started selling itineraries with a point of view.

Book Now, Sail in 2028: The News, Decoded
Atlas Ocean Voyages, the luxury expedition line of Mystic Invest Holding known for intimate, yacht-style ships, unveiled its 2028/29 Antarctica season: 25 expeditions between October 2028 and March 2029. The headline change is that its Drake Fly & Sail program doubles from two departures to four, letting guests cross the notorious Drake Passage by sea one way and by charter flight the other. There are also Drake Express trips (flying both ways), classic nine-night voyages, and an 18-night Grand Antarctica expedition on 7 January 2029 that adds South Georgia and the Falkland Islands. A 16 November 2028 departure marks exactly 100 years since the first powered flight over Antarctica. Launch offers include up to 10% bonus savings, and booking by 31 December 2026 locks in current fares.
Silversea, the ultra-luxury, all-suite line within Royal Caribbean Group, revealed 103 new sailings for 2028-2029: 219 destinations in 56 countries and 29 new ports. New S.A.L.T. culinary voyages (the line’s food-focused programme) include Wine & Truffle sailings in Spain and Italy and Asian Markets voyages between Singapore and Hong Kong. The showpiece is Grand South America 2029, a 75-night round trip aboard Silver Nova from Fort Lauderdale, with a Panama Canal transit and scenic cruising by the Antarctic Peninsula. General sales opened 8 October, after a preview for loyalty members.

Windstar Cruises, a small-ship line, announced five 2027 James Beard Foundation Chef Sailings. The James Beard Foundation is the US culinary non-profit behind the “Oscars of food” awards, and Windstar is its official cruise line. Chefs Roel Alcudia (Greek Isles), Felix Tai (French Polynesia), Cara Tobin (Aegean), Cody Hogan (Greece and Amalfi Coast) and Christine Lau (East Asia) each host a voyage, with chef dinners, demonstrations and market visits. Every sailing, hosted or not, features foundation-chef recipes.
Pavlus Travel & Cruise, one of America’s largest independent luxury travel agencies, reports that river cruising is just 7% of overnight cruise capacity yet growing fast, with at least 25 new river vessels arriving in 2027. Its clients increasingly include Gen X, Millennial and family travelers, drawn by better onboard technology such as Starlink, and many pair river cruises with land stays.

The Perspective
Four announcements, one theme: specialization. The generic “seven nights, eight ports, one buffet” voyage is fading. Premium cruising now competes on a reason to go: a season (truffles), a person (a Beard-recognized chef), a milestone (a centenary of Antarctic flight), or a feat (circling a continent).
The Map to Modern LuxuryTHE CURATED CALENDAR
Discover the world’s most prestigious gatherings & exhibitionsNotice also the horizon. Atlas is asking for deposits two years ahead and nudging buyers with a pricing deadline. That is scarcity marketing applied to the sea: small ships, limited cabins, finite polar weather windows. Expedition cruising in particular has a built-in cap, because regulations and ship size limit how many people may land in Antarctica.
The river story is the quiet disruptor. River ships carry far fewer guests than ocean liners, so growth shows up as more boats rather than bigger ones. The pitch is also changing: connectivity and culture rather than just quiet afternoons. In short, this is not your great-grandmother’s river cruise, though she would probably still approve of the wine.
And the food angle is the most honest of all. Luxury travelers have always chosen destinations by what they will eat; cruise lines have finally noticed and are putting the menu on the route map. When the itinerary is organized around truffle season, you know the chef has been promoted above the captain.
The takeaway: in premium cruising, the destination is no longer enough. The winners will sell a reason, a date and a limited number of seats, and ask you to commit early.
