Ginetta – a new supercar offering real world practicality with a no-compromise driving experience

Ahead of an official unveiling at the Geneva International Motorshow, Ginetta Cars, the British specialist builder of racing and sports cars based in Garforth, Leeds, West Yorkshire, supercar revealed details, imagery and video of its new creation. Given the low volume of production, Ginetta weren’t compromised by having to utilise an existing chassis or drivetrain, allowing the engineers to optimise every aspect of the car.

Combining the precision engineering expertise gained from manufacturing race cars for a range of global race series with the company’s heritage in high-power, low-weight road cars, the new supercar is a driver-orientated yet usable package.

According to Ginetta Chairman Lawrence Tomlinson, his team created a true mid-mid engine design with an all carbon monocoque, LMP-derived aerodynamics and an in-house designed powertrain resulting in a driver-orientated package for the road.” The optimised design with mid-mid layout required a bespoke drivetrain which was developed entirely in-house specifically for the supercar.

“I have felt for a long time there was a gap in the market at around the £400k price point for a genuinely low production number supercar, with proper craftsmanship and true race derived know-how and technology,. added Tomlinson. “Production will be limited to just 20 units in the first production year of 2020, with 60% of this allocation already sold before the car has been revealed.”

“Our customers will get the opportunity to take to the race track in race cars built alongside their car and shake the hands of the engineers that built them. Our customers become part of the family and we believe that really sets Ginetta and the car apart in the supercar world.”

Key to the car’s performance was not just the engine position but the design of the unit itself.

A dry-sumped 6-litre 90-degree V8, constructed from a single aluminium billet block with forged inners, the unit is manufactured in-house by Ginetta’s engineers and even features Ginetta’s own design of throttle bodies. Power is over 600bhp, with torque figures of 700Nm, resulting in a Power to Weight ratio of 545bhp per tonne. Being naturally aspirated engine response is immediate and balancing the car on the throttle requires no electronic aids.

The supercar utilises a full carbon fibre monocoque chassis clothed in carbon fibre body panels. The design language echoes that of Ginetta LMP1 cars and this influence not only creates a distinctive aesthetic but truly exceptional aerodynamic performance above traditional supercars.

A rear wing with the same aerofoil shape as the latest Ginetta LMP1 racer, underbody diffuser, efficient body ducting and slash-cut side-exit exhausts work together to create incredibly smooth airflow, with downforce at 100mph totaling 376kg – just 5% less than Ginetta’s LMP3 car. As with all top-level race cars, this has all been achieved without the use of active aerodynamics.

An adjustable pushrod activated double wishbone suspension system, as used in Ginetta’s LMP1 car, is utilised all-around offering exceptional road feel. This driver connection is heightened through the hydraulic power assisted steering, with an LMP1-inspired carbon fibre steering wheel with billet aluminium shift paddles, and a fully adjustable floor-mounted pedal box.

Ginetta have partnered with another industry leading British manufacturer to create a bespoke gearbox for the new car – a six-speed sequential paddle-shift unit with carbon propshaft. This unit not only delivers lightning fast changes but provides a soundtrack akin to the supercar’s racing siblings.

Wheels are Ginetta designed and manufactured units, 19 inches in the front and 20 inches in the rear. These are made specifically for the new supercar and use Ginetta’s own centre locks as used on race tracks around the world. Behind these sit carbon ceramic brakes.

Driver and passenger sit in lightweight ergonomic seats molded into the car’s carbon tub. With ABS, traction control, reverse camera, automatic headlights, park sensors, air conditioning, heated screens front and rear, wireless phone charging and more, the new supercar offers real world practicality with no-compromise driving experience. What’s more, the cavernous boot has a best-in-class, 675 litre capacity ideal for grand touring.

What it’s like to own and drive a Koenigsegg: Koenigsegg Ghost Squadron 2018

After two consecutive years in Scandinavia, Koenigsegg Ghost Squadron 2018, the Koenigsegg Owners Tour, was held in southern Germany – “the ancestral home of the Koenigsegg family,” as Koenigsegg’s team announced in a statement. The Swedish manufacturer of high-performance sports cars is based in Ängelholm, Skåne County, Sweden.

As has become tradition, the supercar manufacturer produced a video of the weekend. The video offers images of some amazing cars snaking their way through the mountain roads of the Black Forest in Germany and interviews with some Koenigsegg’s customers who gave their thoughts on what it’s like to own and drive a Koenigsegg.

Ghost Squadron 2018 kicked off in Baden-Baden, 70kms west of Stuttgart. Guests and their cars assembled at the Brenners Park Hotel and Spa, a beautiful hotel and our base for the first two nights of the event.

“Our first duty of this event was to present the keys to Thor and Väder to their lucky owners. The two Agera Final Edition cars made their public debut at Ghost Squadron 2018,” said Koenigsegg.

The goal, as always for this event, is to have fun and build friendships within the wider Koenigsegg family. The event is open to all Koenigsegg customers world-wide and while timing and logistics prevent many owners from attending, the 2018 turnout was fantastic with 16 Koenigseggs present and a handful of future customers driving other vehicles as part of an extended fleet.

The largest ever gathering of the Koenigsegg family – 19 cars, took place in 2017 in Sweden. Starting in Malmö, the fleet toured the southern Swedish countryside, including a stop at a wet Ring Knutstorp. The first ever customer, Stephan, who still owns and drives his Koenigsegg CCR today, is also starring in the event video.

Koenigsegg’s factory involvement in this year’s show included three vehicles – two Agera FE models and one Regera.

Fresh from their debuts at the Ghost Squadron event in Germany one week earlier, the Koenigsegg Regera and Agera FE ‘Thor’ were both part of the Michelin Supercar grouping that completed two runs per day up the Goodwood hillclimb circuit. These two cars split the event, with Thor running Thursday and Friday, and the Regera running on the weekend.

On 1 October 2017, an Agera RS set an unofficial record for 0–400–0 km/h (0–249–0 mph) with a time of  36.44 seconds. The record was set at the Vandel Airfield in Denmark and broke the record of 42 seconds. The Agera RS broke the previous record set by the Bugatti Chiron a few weeks earlier.

On 4 November 2017, an Agera RS set a new record for the world’s fastest production car with an average speed of 446.97 km/h (277.73 mph). The record breaking run was done on a closed 11 mi (18 km) section of Nevada State Route 160 in Pahrump, Nevada, United States. On the same day they also beat their own 0– 400–0 km/h record they set a few weeks prior (33.29 seconds compared to the old record of 36.44 seconds).
