Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) is widely considered to be the world’s most important international wine competition, making this recognition yet another big win for Oregon’s burgeoning luxury wine industry. With an elite international panel of judges, the DWWA began the painstaking task of evaluating over 16,500 wines from 56 countries in August. Over the course of 28 consecutive days, 118 expert wine judges, including 37 Masters of Wine and nine Master Sommeliers, bestowed the honor of most awarded winery to Domaine Serene.

Domaine Serene is far and away the most awarded winery in the world at the prestigious Decanter 2020 World Wine Awards. This year, the Dundee Hills winery took home 23 medals including ‘Best in Show’ for their 2016 Domaine Serene Mark Bradford Vineyard Pinot Noir, earning 97 points. The winery also brought home four Gold medals, 17 Silver medals, and one Bronze medal, with five wines earning a remarkable 95 points or more. Domaine Serene was not alone in its success with additional rave reviews coming for Château de la Crée and Maison Evenstad, also owned by proprietors Grace and Ken Evenstad. Their two Burgundian wineries were bestowed with an additional nine medals including seven Silvers. Standing at the top, their 2017 Maison Evenstad, Premier Cru Beaurepaire Santenay, earned 95 points, besting several Grand Cru Burgundies in the tasting.

“To be the most awarded winery in the world at the DWWA is a testament to the quality of our vineyards and to the talent, hard work and
dedication of our team,” said Grace Evenstad, Co-Founder and Owner of Domaine Serene. “To receive ‘Best in Show’ for our Mark Bradford Vineyard Pinot Noir is especially gratifying. We named the vineyard after our son, Mark Bradford Evenstad, and it was the first vineyard that we ever planted at Domaine Serene almost thirty years ago. Planting its high elevation slopes and west facing aspect went against advice from the local vintners, yet we knew it had the potential to make world-class wine and so we planted it anyway. It has always been one of my favorite wines and I have long appreciated the power, structure, and longevity of our Mark Bradford Pinot Noirs. We are thrilled that it has received such critical acclaim at such an important competition.”

“In its 17th year, the DWWA is the world’s largest and most influential wine competition. Judged by the top wine experts from around the globe, the DWWA is trusted internationally for its rigorous blind judging process and regional experts,” said Bree Stock, Master of Wine and Education Manager of the Oregon Wine Board. “It’s an enormous feat for a region like Oregon, that represents a fraction of US global exports, to receive ‘Best in Show’ along with the breadth of medals in such a prestigious competition. This award raises the profile and awareness of our region’s wines not only to Decanters’ highly informed consumer audience, but also to the global wine experts on the judging panel. Congratulations Domaine Serene.”

The Dundee Hills winery also brought home 17 Silver medals and one Bronze medal, more details can be found here. Domaine Serene wines have now earned 95 points and above by major critics an astounding 115 times! This is in addition to being awarded #1 Ranked Pinot Noir in the World by Wine Spectator in 2013 and in 2016 #1 Pinot Noir in the World by Decanter and #1 White Wine in the World by Wine Spectator, for its ‘Evenstad Reserve’ Chardonnay. This universal acclaim from an array of critics solidifies Domaine Serene as America’s Most Acclaimed Winery.

    Decanter Wine Awards 2015--bottle

The best palates of the world were brought together by Vinexpo Fair (June 14 to 18 in Bordeaux,  France) and Decanter magazine to judge wines from all over the globe.

Now in its 12th year, the Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) is the world’s largest and most influential wine competition. The Decanter World Wine Awards is trusted internationally for its rigorous judging process. The world’s most renowned wine authorities fly in from over 20 countries to be part of the judging panel, which includes over 60 Masters of Wine, over 15 Master Sommeliers and previous winners of the World’s Best Sommelier title.

    2015 DWWA medals table

International trophies are the highest accolade a wine can achieve at the DWWA. Wines that have already been awarded regional trophies – themselves all gold medal winners – are pitted against each other according to their style in lengthy blind tasting sessions, conducted by a select team of experts at Decanter’s purpose- built tasting room in London.

This year’s awards saw 35 international trophies awarded from a total 15,929 wines tasted at the beginning of the judging process, including eight for France, six for Australia and five for South Africa and four for Spain.

Spain has boosted its reputation as a rising force in fine wine at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2015, taking the international trophy for Red Bordeaux varietals over £15, in a year that produced several surprises and also saw Australian, French and South African wines prosper.

In results announced on the first day of Vinexpo 2015, Spain’s Miguel Torres scooped the international trophy for Red Bordeaux varietals over £15 for its Reserva Real 2010 vintage from Penedes in Catalonia. The wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot grapes and was created in the 1990s, following a visit of Spain’s King Don Juan Carlos to the winery.

Torres’ victory in a Bordeaux category is a further example of Spain’s growing reputation for quality. Sarah Jane Evans MW, regional chair for Spain and Sherry at the Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) 2015, has said that Spain is ‘the most exciting thing happening in European wine right now’.

Other Spanish wines taking international trophies at this year’s awards include Gonzalez Byass’ Cuatro Palmas, an Amontillado Sherry, which won Dry fortified over £15.

Among the international trophy winners was Bay of Fires‘ Sauvignon Blanc 2014 vintage from Tasmania – produced by Hardys owner Accolade Wines – which won Sauvignon Blanc over £15.

Back in Europe, Slovenia won the international trophy for Sweet wine over £15 thanks to Ptujska Klet Pullus’ Laski Rizling 2012 vintage.

There were also signs of Bordeaux recouping greater recognition for dry white wines – as featured in Anson on Thursday – after Chateau Brown won White blend over £15 for its 2013 vintage.

Elsewhere, UK retailer Marks & Spencer proved that good quality white Burgundy doesn’t have to cost a fortune by winning the international trophy for Chardonnay under £15 for its own-label Macon Villages, Cote Maconnais 2014 vintage.

DWWA chairman Steven Spurrier said, ‘Our standards are high, and so are our expectations. We only award medals to wines in which consumers can have the utmost confidence.’

A country to watch: China doubling the number of medals won at the largest wine competition in the world

China wins 18 medals at world’s largest wine competition

China nearly doubled its awards at the 2012 Decanter World Wine Awards, the largest wine competition in the world. Chinese wines won 18 medals (11 medals in 2011), signaling the nation’s potential as a winemaking country. The Chinese wines won one Gold medal, two Silver, 10 Bronze and five Commended.

The majority of winning wines are Cabernet blends, but the list includes a Reserve Traminer 2010 from Château Sun God – part of Great Wall – in Hebei, Domaine Helan Mountain’s Reserve Pinot and Reserve Merlot, a Chardonnay and the white grape Dragon Eye, both from Great Wall.

Among the top winners was Chateau Reifeng-Auzias in Shandong province which won the Regional Trophy for Red Middle, Far East & Asia under £10 for its Cabernet 2010, with the same producer taking Silver for its Syrah 2010.

Decanter publishing director Sarah Kemp said China’s continuing success at the DWWA ‘yet again confirms that it is a country to watch. We are just beginning to see a glimpse of its potential.’

Tastings director Christelle Guibert said, ‘It’s great to see so many rarely-seen wine-producing countries do so well at this year’s DWWA, often faring much better than more established countries and famous regions. It just goes to show how far the quality of wine has come in countries that, like the UK, were once considered to be on the fringes of wine production.’

With 14,119 wines tasted 2012 Decanter World Wine Awards is the largest entry ever for the Decanter World Wine Awards, now in its 9th year. A number of other unusual winemaking countries fared particularly well this year. Turkey saw 83% of its wines receive an award, Slovenia achieved 77% and Croatia 63%.
