Bvlgari Lights a Diya: What a Roman Jeweler Is Doing in Jaipur

The house of the serpent has staged its first-ever global Diwali, and it chose clay over gold to start the conversation.

Luxury houses usually celebrate Diwali with a limited-edition box and a discreet greeting card. Bvlgari decided to light the lamp, quite literally, with an art installation and a hero film.

Light, Clay and Gold

Bvlgari, the Roman high jeweler founded in 1884 and famed for its serpent-inspired Serpenti designs (part of the LVMH group), has launched Passing the Light, which it calls its first-ever global Diwali campaign. The centerpiece is a monumental installation by Indian artist Doyel Joshi, unveiled at an intimate evening at the Jaipur Centre for Art, with guests including author Twinkle Khanna, Bvlgari MEAI managing director Stéphane Larher and art patron Noelle Kadar, co-founder of the centre.

Inspired by the traditional diya, the small clay lamp lit at Diwali, the work comprises 4,500 hand-sculpted terracotta elements shaped in Bvlgari’s Serpenti scales. Each was made in close collaboration with the traditional kumhar (potter) community and local craftswomen, and illuminated individually so that, together, they form a landscape of light and shadow. A digital campaign built around a hero film traces the piece from earth to kiln to finished form. The brand frames the work as a dialogue between terracotta and gold, Indian and Roman craftsmanship, united by the human hand.

Reading Between the Diyas

Why Diwali, why now? India is one of the most closely watched growth markets in luxury, and Diwali is its biggest season for gifting, jewelry and gold. A house that already sells high jewelry there has an obvious reason to speak to the festival directly. “Global” is the telling word: Bvlgari is positioning the festival as a worldwide luxury moment, much as others treat Lunar New Year or Christmas.

Clay as a luxury material. The smartest decision was to start with terracotta. A jeweler could have bathed the festival in diamonds; instead Bvlgari showed it values the craft beneath the ritual. The clay-versus-gold pairing lets it claim respect for local tradition while keeping its own symbol, the serpent scale, at the center.

Art as the entry ticket. Choosing a contemporary Indian artist and a respected art institution turns a seasonal campaign into cultural content. This is the luxury playbook of 2026: when everyone sells products, you sell meaning. Bvlgari has also earned something advertising cannot buy, which is credibility with a gifting culture that takes craft seriously.

A gentle caveat. Festival marketing walks a fine line between honoring and appropriating. Involving the kumhar community and local craftswomen directly is the right instinct, and the real test is whether the engagement continues beyond one season, and whether the people behind the clay share in the story as well as the credit.

What to expect. More houses will follow with their own festive projects tied to local craft: expect installations, limited gifting collections and films rather than simple greeting-card gestures.

Humor break: 4,500 hand-made terracotta scales is a lot of snakes to carry through a Jaipur evening, and not one of them tried to bite the guests.

Final Flourish

Bvlgari’s lesson is that luxury respects a festival most when it lets the craft speak first. The light, in this case, is made of clay.
