H. Moser & Cie is making Swiss Made great again with the Swiss Mad Watch, the cheese watch

H. Moser & Cie’s Swiss Mad Watch was one of the must-see pieces of SIHH2017. For it’s truly a Very Rare occasion to witness a 100% Swiss Made watch…

H Moser & Cie Venturer Swiss Mad - the Swiss Mad Watch was one of the must-see pieces of SIHH2017

The Swiss Mad Watch is unique, symbolic, and irreverent, but most importantly, 100% Swiss and proud of it. With the Swiss Made label for watchmaking revised from January 1st, 2017, to require 60% of components in a watch to be of Swiss origin, H. Moser & Cie. has soundly critiqued the shortcomings of this inadequate label and stands up for true independent Swiss watchmakers. For the Schaffhausen-based Manufacture, whose creations are over 95% Swiss, this label is too lenient, providing no guarantee, creating confusion and encouraging abuses of the system. For these reasons, H. Moser & Cie. has decided to remove the Swiss Made label from all new watches created from 2017 onwards.

Created in Switzerland, by Swiss watchmakers and using Swiss materials: the Swiss Mad Watch has symbolic value, tackling Swiss Made debate head on to reveal the truth behind this label. With this unique watch, H. Moser & Cie. demonstrates the importance and urgency of returning Swiss Made to its former heights. Echoing the absurdity and the ridiculous change to the Swiss Made legislation, H. Moser & Cie.’s satirical comment on the issue highlights an alternative resource, 100% natural and entirely Swiss, one of the most precious Swiss resources that exists: cows. The case of the Swiss Mad Watch is created from real Swiss cheese as a base material, a Vacherin Mont d’Or médaille d’or, added to an innovative composite material, itr2©, then machined and polished with the H. Moser signature finishes. For the strap, Swiss cowhide was the obvious choice. The watch is finished with a red fumé dial and doubled indices at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock, subtly reminiscent of the Swiss flag.

Disruptive? “Definitely,” responds Edouard Meylan, CEO of H. Moser & Cie. “Our Swiss Mad Watch sends a clear message to the Swiss watchmaking industry, the authorities and watch enthusiasts: the Swiss Made label is meaningless. Worse than this, it gives credibility to the worst abuses in our industry. Our response to this lax and insufficient label is derision. At H. Moser & Cie., we produce watches that are truly Swiss, watches that are steeped in watchmaking tradition and centuries of experience. The quality of these pieces speaks for itself and dispenses with the need for a label. We are no longer “Swiss Made”, but we are Swiss. 100% Swiss, in the case of the Swiss Mad Watch, and over 95% Swiss for all of our other models,” concludes Edouard Meylan.

H. Moser & Cie also launched a lactose-free version of the watch with white gold case, but there’s still some Marguerite there.

F.P.Journe Vagabondage III. World Premiere: Digital Jumping Seconds

The Third Edition of the Vagabondage Trilogy. A unique combination of jumping hours and seconds to end the Vagabondage saga on an astonishing note: the Vagabondage III.

Salon F.P. Journe 2017

F.P. Journe presents the third edition of the Vagabondage Series, “Vagabondage III”, produced ina limited series of 69 pieces in Platinum and 68 pieces in 18K red Gold. F.P. Journe is the only Manufacture to design and produce a specific calibre for a series limited to only 137 pieces.

In 2004, François-Paul Journe designed 3 unprecedented new watches with a flat Tortue case, a digital time display and a dial without signature, for the 30th anniversary of Antiquorum. Those 3 watches, one in white Gold, one in yellow Gold, and one in rose Gold, with brass movements, were sold at a charity auction for the benefit of ICM, a research institute for brain and spinal cord diseases (icm-institute.org). The watches captured the interest of the public, and sold for three times the estimate.

In the wake of the resounding success of that auction, F.P. Journe launched in 2006 the Vagabondage I Series. The name Vagabondage comes from the fact that the time is indicated by a wandering digital display; the design itself was “vagabond” in that it was created by François- Paul Journe as a satellite creation, in addition to his regular collections. “Even without promotion or publicity, clients went wild. They snapped them up, and the Vagabondage legend was born,” recalls the Swiss watch manufacture.

The second F.P. Journe Vagabondage Series, the Vagabondage II was created in 2010. It features a manually wound movement with digital hours and minutes displays, as well as small seconds and power reserve displays. The smoked sapphire crystal dial, without the F.P. Journe signature,
reveals the 18 ct. rose gold movement.

F.P.Journe developed a specific barrel and a remontoir d’égalité, providing more efficient energy transmission for the instantaneous jump of the digital minutes and hours.

Collectors have been eagerly awaiting the launch of the Vagabondage III Series. This third edition retains the flat Tortue case, the same size as the Vagabondage II, with a manuallywound movement with a remontoir d’égalité that advances the time train each second.

How about a closer look at the Vagabondage III’s unique display?

The inner smoked sapphire dial, framed by an outer dial with screw-down accents (and stillwithout the F.P.Journe signature), reveals the specially conceived 18K rose gold movement.

A window at 10 o’clock displays the digital hour indications, while another at 6 o’clock indicates the digital seconds; both framed in white. The central minutes are indicated by a white hand, while the power reserve at 1 o’clock featuring a blued steel hand.

“The 3 digital time displays have now been created, making the trilogy complete. Owners of the Vagabondage I and II will be given priority to allow them to acquire the watch with the identical limited series number. Collectors may thus complete their own trilogy and possess a part of F.P. Journe horological history,” says F.P.Journe.
