Milan Design Week 2022: New boats are inspired by phytoplankton and its capability to convert sunlight into energy

We don’t know how it all begun. We were the stars of the sea, our light was seen beyond the sky.

@Rossinavi “Blue, the Underwater Experience”

Rossinavi presents “Blue, the Underwater Experience” at Superdesign Show. Superstudio più, Milan Design Week 2022.

On the occasion of the upcoming edition of the Milan Design Week, Rossinavi makes its debut at the Superdesign Show presenting a one-of-a-kind installation that will invite visitors to learn about phytoplankton, the inspiration for the company’s green projects, at the entrance of Superstudio Più. “BluE, The Underwater Experience” will remain on show from 6 to 12 June 2022.

The Italian shipyard, globally known for its manufacturing expertise and know-how in building custom made super yachts, will showcase its advanced sustainable innovations through an immersive and interactive installation, in which visitors will be able to experience life underwater.

Rossinavi has recently presented a new line of electric catamarans that, thanks to photovoltaic panels, are able to offer zero-emission navigation for 90% of the time. Following the success of studies related to this new technology, the shipyard has started collaborations for new concepts of catamarans, inspired by the marine environment.

This new generation of boats has been designed to offer an unrivalled experience for the owner and his guests while surrounded by the sounds of the ocean. Three tiers of solar panels, fully integrated into the design, allow for all-electric sailing 100% of the time on daily trips. An artificial intelligence-driven control center monitors energy consumption, ensuring the lowest possible environmental impact, preserving battery life, and maintaining capacity in its optimal range. Daily trips on this new line can be zero-emission, and during a transatlantic crossing the catamaran can remain in all-electric mode for the 80% of the time trip.

With “BluE, The Underwater Experience”, Rossinavi invites visitors to experience life underwater and learn all there is to know about phytoplankton.

These tiny creatures have inhabited the planet for hundreds of millions of years and have always contributed to its welfare. Thanks to their ability to release oxygen through photosynthesis, phytoplankton can capture 11 gigatons of CO2 per year. They are small, vital and, sadly, acutely sensitive to climate change. These creatures encapsulate the magnificence of History and the fragile delicacy of life.

The boat’s concept is inspired by phytoplankton, mainly due to their capability to convert sunlight into energy for their survival. At night, the energy accumulated during the day is released, making phytoplankton bioluminescent.

Similarly, this new line, is designed to absorb sunlight during the daylight hours and transform it into energy, taking advantage of the photovoltaics’ capabilities. The catamaran can store and harness clean energy thanks to its advanced technology batteries and solar panels.

“Green is a vision, an education that drives us to develop sustainable technologies. This gives us the responsibility to provide the means to best enjoy the sea, immerse ourselves in its natural splendor and respect it”, states Federico Rossi, COO of Rossinavi.

The company’s green philosophy stems from an everlasting love for the sea of which these tiny creatures are a fundamental part, since they are responsible for life on earth.

Refik Anadol unveils Serpenti – the first ever digital sculpture and AI-imagined fragrance done for a luxury house

Bvlgari celebrates Serpenti in sculpture artwork created using dynamic, three-dimensional AI data.

@Bvlgari Serpenti Metamorphosis

Italian luxury house Bvlgari continues the Serpenti Metamorphosis exhibition inaugurated during Milan Design Week, featuring a captivating installation by multimedia artist Refik Anadol, created using artificial intelligence. The digital sculpture – the fist ever done for a luxury house – is on display until October 31 at the Piazza Duomo in Milan before embarking on a world tour. Upon the completion of the tour it will be converted into a multisensorial and multidimensional NFT (Non-Fungible Token) and sold at an auction. Proceeds will be donated to a charity chosen by the Italian Maison and Refik Anadol.

The 3D sculpture celebrates the beauty of nature and the mythic Serpenti icon, the emblem of Bvlgari and the perfect symbol of metamorphosis. It was designed using algorithms to reproduce an image of nature generated by analyzing some 200 million pictures of nature and 160 million pictures of flowers, plus 120,000 images of snakes. Metamorphosis becomes both a source of inspiration and the creative method, since the machine is able to learn what a flower is – colors, patterns and shapes – and then conceive images of flowers that exist only in its digital memory, reconstituting them in a vibrant work of art. The installation proposes a striking aesthetic approach to the relationship between nature, art, technology and luxury.

This approach was conceived by the mind of Refik Anadol. Born in Istanbul, the LA-based new media artist has won numerous awards for his innovative works.

Listen as he explains the concept behind ‘Serpenti Metamorfosi’ and how he turned data from our natural world into this three-dimensional and dynamic digital installation. In the future, Serpenti Metamorphosis artwork will become exclusive and unique in the digital world thanks to NFT (Non-fungible Token) technology.

To enrich this unique multi sensorial experience, Bvlgari Master Perfumer Sophie Labbe and fragrance creation firm Firmenich worked with Refik Anadol to create the first ever AI-imagined fragrance, “Rainforest Serpenti”. Thanks to Bvlgari’s expertise, the sculpture celebrates every dimension of nature, including its scent, awakening faculties of perception, sensation and smell.

This immersion into the Serpenti universe is completed by an exhibition of creations by the Roman Maison from the 1940s to the 1960s at the Bvlgari store in Milan until October 30, as well as the Bvlgari Serpenti Hub. This digital space dedicated to the Maison’s icon features exclusive content revealing the eternal metamorphosis that inspires Bvlgari creations.
