Hermeus, a supersonic commercial jet travel company, wants to radically increase the speed of travel over long distances. Hermeus is building the fastest aircraft in the world. Alongside Boom Supersonic and Boeing HorizonX, Hermeus promises to make supersonic commercial jets a reality.

Atlanta-based Hypersonic Aircraft Startup Hermeus is a startup increasing the speed of air transportation by developing hypersonic aircraft. The vision of the company is to connect the world’s cities significantly faster than ever before.

The aerospace technology company founded in 2018 is developing aircraft capable of flight in excess of Mach 5 – over 3,000 miles per hour. At Mach 5, flight times from New York to London will be reduced from 7 hours to 90 minutes. The aircraft will be capable of a range of 4,600 miles at a cruising speed of 3,300 miles per hour. The product’s design enables it to operate with minimal changes to current aviation infrastructure. Boom Supersonic’s jet that will be capable of traveling at speeds of Mach 2.2.

This month Hermeus announced a Seed round investment. The round was led by Khosla Ventures, with additional participation from private investors. The financing will further the development and test of Hermeus’ hypersonic propulsion system.

“Hermeus is developing an aircraft that not only improves the aviation experience with very reduced flight times but also has the potential to have a great societal and economic impact,” said Vinod Khosla, founder of Khosla Ventures.

“We’ve set out on a journey to revolutionize the global transportation infrastructure, bringing it from the equivalent of dial- up into the broadband era, by radically increasing the speed of travel over long distances.” said co-founder and CEO AJ Piplica. “We’re excited to work with Khosla Ventures to turn this vision into reality.”

The Hermeus founders consist of alumni from SpaceX and Blue Origin. Additionally, all four worked together at Generation Orbit, where AJ Piplica served as CEO and Glenn Case, Mike Smayda, and Skyler Shuford served as technical directors. While there, they led the development of the X-60A, a hypersonic rocket-plane and the Air Force’s newest X-Plane.

Like the space flight, Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations wanted this vehicle to be unique, so every astronaut will get a piece of wood in their vehicle that have actually been to space. One-off interior design includes custom cup holder crafted from the spaceship’s front landing skid, ‘DNA of Flight’ logo graphic veneer and aluminium door handles with the Future astronaut community constellation design.

The unique Zero Gravity Blue paint finish is inspired by the depth and intensity of the night sky. A bespoke puddle lamp illumination design features the silhouette of Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo while unique Astronaut Edition badging features on the tailgate and side profile finishers.

Inside, the Astronaut Edition features a crafted piece of the spaceship’s front landing skid that flew on Virgin Spaceship  Unity’s first space flight in December 2018. Part of that skid, which provides the spaceship with a highly effective, lightweight braking mechanism, has been re-purposed to form two discs within the cup holders. One of these references a quote which Richard Branson often makes to his fellow Future Astronauts – ‘See you up there’ -and the other features the details of the space flight. Once a Future Astronaut has flown to space, and becomes an astronaut, this will be swapped out with part of the wooden skid from that customer’s own spaceflight, personally inscribed with the specific details of a life changing experience.

Further bespoke features include a ‘DNA of Flight’ graphic on the carbon fibre front console drawer lid and this motif is also debossed onto the leather rear armrest. Solid aluminium metal door handles are engraved with Virgin Galactic’s own Future Astronaut community constellation pattern which represents a global community connected by a love of space. This design also features on the rear of the front headrests and metal letterbox panel design above the glovebox. Additional personalisation options include stitching the Future Astronaut’s initials onto the headrests.

The Astronaut Edition is available with Land Rover’s P400e plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powertrain, which delivers a combined 404PS, EV range of 42km and CO2 emissions of 72g/km – subject to market availability. A high- performance 5.0-litre V8 P525 supercharged petrol is also offered.

Seattle-based Stratolaunch Systems Corporation, founded by American business magnate, investor, researcher, humanitarian, and philanthropist Paul G. Allen, successfully completed the first flight of the world’s largest all-composite aircraft, the Stratolaunch. With a dual fuselage design and wingspan greater than the length of an American football field (with 385-foot wingspan), the Stratolaunch aircraft is a remarkable engineering achievement.

Achieving a maximum speed of 189 miles per hour, the plane flew for 2.5 hours over the Mojave Desert at altitudes up to 17,000 feet. As part of the initial flight, the pilots evaluated aircraft performance and handling qualities before landing successfully back at the Mojave Air and Space Port.

“What a fantastic first flight,” said Jean Floyd, CEO of Stratolaunch. “Today’s flight furthers our mission to provide a flexible alternative to ground-launched systems. We are incredibly proud of the Stratolaunch team, today’s flight crew, our partners at Northrop Grumman’s Scaled Composites and the Mojave Air and Space Port.”

The Stratolaunch aircraft is a mobile launch platform that will enable airline-style access. The reinforced center wing can support multiple launch vehicles, weighing up to a total of 500,000 pounds.
