Stargazer: This large classic lined motorboat, intended as a sailing yacht tender, is a unique concept

The Dutch shipyards Vitters and Claasen combined their efforts to build the 23m chase boat Stargazer. It is the first time the two sister companies worked together on a new build project.

Claasen Shipyards Netherlands’ 23m chase boat Stargazer is designed to get guests and owner from ashore to the yacht in comfort and to visit shallow diving areas.

Hoek Design Architects was responsible for all naval architecture, structural engineering, exterior and interior design of Stargazer. This is the 27th project on which Claasen and Hoek Design have collaborated. André Hoek, owner of Hoek Design, tells passionately about the design: “It is a timeless and classic design which perfectly fits the style of the mothership. This motorboat differs from all other tenders, which definitely makes it a unique project.”

The concept of the yacht is designed around several purposes the yacht needs to fulfill.

Accommodating extra crew or guests in the three cabins onboard the yacht, Stargazer tender transports guests from shore to mothership. The boat serves as a diving platform that goes into small lagoons and shallow areas where people can comfortably go in and out of the water using a large swim platform in the stern that forms steps underwater when deployed. The yacht tender is able to hold extra stores onboard.

The owner wanted the boat to have a Pacific range, meaning she is able to be powered by engines underway for 900 miles at cruising speed. The boat was designed with two 912 hp SCANIA engines to drive fixed propellers for a cruising speed of 15 knots and a top speed of 25 knots.

The yacht was built to superyacht standards as far as performance, finish, styling, details and technical installations are concerned. The lightweight aluminium hull was built in the Netherlands and all technical installations and joinery work have been executed by the Dutch shipyards.

During the entire process, the owner has been represented by Taco Zwarts from TZ Technical Support. In 2015, Taco relocated to Palma de Mallorca and started TZ Technical Support. He has been assisting many yachts in solving technical issues, organising service work and repairs and managing refits and new builds.

Another recently launched yacht at Claasen Shipyards is the 30.4 m refit sailing yacht Reesle, a Dutch built yacht that was also designed by Hoek Design.

BOAT International nominated the 23 m tender Stargazer as on of the finalists for the Design & Innovation Awards 2020 in the category  “Tender of the Year – Limo”.
