Capital & Counties Properties PLC together with Robert De Niro and BD Hotels were granted planning approval by Westminster City Council to create a visionary new 83-room luxury boutique hotel, The Wellington Hotel, in London’s Covent Garden.

The new development will be the first hotel outside of the US for boutique hotel pioneers De Niro, Ira Drukier and Richard Born – the team behind the internationally renowned The Greenwich Hotel in New York’s Tribeca district.

His transition from Hollywood A-lister to hospitality impresario may have already earned him an award for opening the “world’s worst luxury hotel of 2015” but Robert De Niro’s property empire is now reaching British shores.

The Oscar-winning actor has been granted planning permission for an 83-bedroom boutique hotel in Covent Garden, central London.

De Niro will be joint operator of the luxury Wellington hotel, which will also feature a spa, members’ club and two restaurants. It will be housed in six Victorian and early 20th-century buildings – three of them Grade II listed – in Wellington, Tavistock, Burleigh and Exeter Streets.

Commenting on the project in May, De Niro said: “London is one of the most exciting and cosmopolitan cities in the world. It makes perfect sense to develop a hotel that represents all of that in the heart of this city in Covent Garden.

“The Wellington hotel will honour the heritage of the area, while bringing the best of what we’ve done in New York to London.”

The venture will be De Niro’s third foray into the hotel business. In 2008, he opened the popular Greenwich hotel, home to the Tribeca film festival.

Less successful was the actor’s Nobu hotel in Manila, Philippines, which was named one of the worst luxury hotels of 2015. Luxury Travel Intelligence said there were “some questionable developments and overexpansion”.

Cllr Robert Davis, deputy leader of Westminster city council, said of the London project: “This is one of the finest schemes we have considered for Covent Garden in years. The design is of the highest quality and it fits the bill as a Covent Garden building that meshes the new with the old. The hotel will attract visitors from all over the world.”

Investing in the hospitality business is a popular venture for Hollywood actors. Clint Eastwood, Hugh Jackman and Elizabeth Hurley own hotels, while Leonardo DiCaprio’s luxury, eco-friendly resort on the island of Blackadore Caye in Belize is due to open in 2018.

Such ventures are not always a success, however. Rigsby’s Guest House, which was mainly owned by Harry Potter star Rupert Grint, was closed due to poor sales.
